On Wednesday I was in Birmingham to launch the Your safety. Your choice document setting out the choices for voters in the upcoming election. You can download it here.
I had a fantastic meeting with Birmingham women, first time voters and candidates Shabana Mahmood and Lynette Kelly. We talked about politics, the debated and Labour’s record in reducing violent crime, including domestic violence.
It was good to have the chance to hear about the issues that these women wanted us to address in the future: protection on the internet, support for victims of crime and tackling anti-social behaviour. The women I spoke with were pleased to hear about the progress in reporting and the conviction rate in cases of violence against women thanks in part to CCTV and DNA technology. And they said that they did not agree with the idea of depriving magistrates or criminal courts the option of short sentences for domestic violence offences.
There is no doubt that this election is big decision about the kind of future we all want for your family and for Britain and the Labour Party is building a future that is fair for all
