Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, responding to the announcement that Scottish and Southern Energy plan to offer their electricity for sale to any household supplier, said:
"At the Labour Party Conference, Ed Miliband called for reform to the energy market to end the dominance of the big six and get a fairer deal for the people of Britain. I welcome Scottish and Southern Energy's decision to auction 100% of its power and call on the other five big energy companies to follow suit. By introducing more competition and more transparency, we can help people know they are getting a fair deal and paying a fair price for the energy they use.
"While the Tory-led Government has failed to act to prevent sky-high energy price rises, Labour is leading the way and coming up with radical ideas to reform our energy market and deliver significant reductions in gas and electricity bills for millions of consumers."
