The Labour Government has announced additional action to create jobs and ensure that a generation is not lost to unemployment.
The announcement includes 47,000 new jobs for young people and the long term unemployed, funded by the £1bn Future Jobs Fund. The fund will go on to create 150,000 new jobs in total.
Yvette Cooper, Labour’s Work and Pensions Secretary, also launched a new nationwide campaign – ‘Backing Young Britain’. The campaign brings together businesses, public sector organisations and charities to find opportunities to help young people find work through internships, apprenticeships, mentoring services and job clubs.
Funding for 20,000 internships has also been announced – half of which will be for 18-21 year olds who haven’t been to university.
Labour is determined that every young person should get help to find a job or training or work skills and experience.
Yvette Cooper said:
“We are determined not to lose a generation of talent because of the recession. Many young people were denied the help they needed in the recessions of 80s and 90s ended up out of work for months and years. Too many never got a start in the jobs market.
“We are determined not to let that happen again. This is why we are announcing 47,000 new jobs for young people today. And - with business and charities - we are launching a national call to action to our fellow employers to join us in Backing Young Britain - to give every young person a job, training place, skills or work experience.”
