Use of chemical weapons on any scale should be condemned unequivocally - Douglas Alexander

26 April 2013

Douglas AlexanderDouglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on reports that chemical weapons may have been deployed in Syria, said:

“The use of chemical weapons on any scale should be condemned unequivocally by the whole of the international community and is a clear breach of international law.

“Special Envoy Brahimi has been clear about the steps necessary to achieve a peaceful political transition in Syria, and crucial to that must be granting the necessary freedom of movement and access to allow a thorough investigation into the reported use of chemical weapons in Syria.

“The UK Government must now liaise closely with Britain’s allies to fully investigate these recent reports, and intensify efforts to encourage Russia to cease their ongoing support for President Assad’s brutal regime.”
