Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to John Vine's report "An Inspection of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Immigration Team", said:
“The Tory-led Government is failing on illegal immigration.
“The damning conclusion from the Government's own Immigration Inspector has concluded that the Government is giving a very low priority to finding and removing people who have been refused permission to stay.
“Out of 150,000 people refused leave to remain, the Government seems not to know or care how many are still here.
“The number of people absconding at Heathrow has nearly tripled, and the number of people caught halved under this Tory-led Government. And the number of people breaking the rules who were removed has dropped by over 20 per cent since before the election.
“We’ve had the fiasco of the border scandal, where the Home Secretary has admitted we will never know how many people came in without checks. We now have huge queues at our airports because of poor management and the cuts to nearly 900 UK Border Force staff.
“The Home Secretary and the Immigration Minister need to get their act together and bring in tough action on illegal immigration. It isn't fair on legal migrants or on anyone else if the rules are not enforced.”
