Sadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on the details in today's announcement by the Government on a strategy for victims and witnesses, said:
"This consultation paper is a missed opportunity to build on the progress Labour made during 13 years in prioritising the role of victims and witnesses at every point in our justice system.
"The strategy document is completely silent on future of the Victims and Witnesses Commissioner. Before she left her post, the Commissioner was rightly a thorn in the side of the Government. She had been critical of many of the current Government’s policies over the last 20 months. Not committing to replace her – and the important role the Commissioner plays in speaking up for victims within the corridors of power – shows a lack of priority placed on the needs of victims of crime by this Government.
“Rather than re-packing the existing Victims Code, entitlements for victims should be enshrined in statute – with real teeth – as called for by the previous Victims’ Commissioner, Louise Casey. Under the Government’s proposals, it is not clear where the responsibility in our justice system will lie for ensuring the needs of victims and witnesses are looked after and protected."
