Labour today highlighted the growing cost of living crisis afflicting millions of families, following a report by Save the Children showing that the Government's scheme for help with bills currently reaches just 3% of families at risk of fuel poverty.
Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, responding to the report, said:
"Today’s news that just three per cent of families are getting the help they need with rocketing energy bills, follows hard on the heels of soaring train fares and the IFS report showing families with children will be hardest hit by this Government’s policies.
"It is another damning indictment of a Government that is unable to stand up for hard-working people against powerful lobbies and vested interests.
"At a time when families are facing record fuel bills and energy companies are enjoying huge profits, people will be shocked that just three per cent of families are getting the help they need.
"For too long energy companies have been able to do what they want at the expense of everybody else. But this Government is so out of touch that it is doing nothing to help millions of families struggling to heat their homes this winter."
