Take a Long Hard Look at The ToriesThe Tories on DNA

A senior police officer has said that he is "absolutely certain" that further limiting the DNA database, as in Scotland, would mean "offenders who could still be out there committing further serious offences".  The Conservatives have said they “would implement the Scottish system”.

"I'm absolutely certain that there are cases where had these un-convicted people been removed from the database there would be quiet serious crimes that weren't solved by police and offenders who could still be out there committing further serious offences."

Chris [Grayling] stressed the importance of remembering that people are innocent until proven guilty and of achieving the "right balance" – and he said: “I can see no reason to be storing the DNA of people who have not been convicted of any offence.” Chris promised that a Conservative Government would implement the Scottish system, where a DNA sample is taken on arrest but then deleted if the person is cleared, or kept for a maximum of five years if they are cleared of serious sexual or violent offence.
