Liam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, speaking ahead of the vote on benefits uprating in the House of Commons, said:
“The Strivers’ Tax is an attack on hardworking families while the richest people in the country get a £2,000 a week tax cut, and Labour will vote against it.
“This bill hits seven million working families, takes £180 from new mums and pushes 200,000 children into poverty.
“There is a simple choice for MPs tonight. Either vote down this rotten bill or spend the next two years explaining to the thousands of strivers in their constituencies why they thought George Osborne’s cheap political games were more important than backing Britain’s hardworking families.”
