Andy Burnham MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, in response to the announcement by Monitor that it is beginning the procedure for putting Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust into special administration, said:
"After all they have been through, it could not be possibly be right or fair if the end result of this process sees the people of Stafford lose their hospital or some of its crucial services.
"That has always been my consistent position and the need to help the hospital recover influenced all the decisions I made on this matter as Health Secretary in 2009 and 2010.
"When I first brought in Robert Francis QC, my aim was to establish the truth and learn the lessons but without distracting Stafford Hospital from the essential task of making improvements and securing its viability.
"People in Stafford will have seen what has happened in Lewisham and have understandable concerns about what administration might mean. They deserve a safe and sustainable hospital and I would urge the Health Secretary to keep this in mind when responding to Monitor’s recommendation."
