Sports stars and celebrities show their support for Labour

Gordon Brown at Labour's Sports DinnerLabour's annual Sports Dinner and Auction raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the party's campaign fund last night at Wembley Stadium.

The dinner saw sports stars, celebrities, Cabinet Ministers, and guests turn out in force to celebrate British sport alongside Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah.

The auction, compered by former Sports Minister Richard Caborn MP and ex-Downing St Director of Communications Alastair Campbell, saw intense bidding.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Labour Sports Dinner patron and Manchester United manager, said: "I am pleased once again to show my support for a Labour government which has made a huge difference for British sport in the last ten years - winning the Olympics for London, improving grassroots facilities, and getting the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Labour's commitment to sport and Gordon Brown's passion for it is beyond question."

Ex-England Cricketer Devon Malcolm said: "Labour's passion for sport was clear to see tonight."

Richard Caborn MP, former Labour Sports Minister, said: "I'm absolutely delighted that the second Labour Sports Dinner at Wembley Stadium was such a huge success. Over 600 guests and sports stars attended and many acknowledged how much Labour has done to develop British sport over the last decade. We raised hundreds of thousands for Labour's campaigning, we showed our support for the British Olympic Team, and everyone had a great time."

Guests and Labour ministers joined together to send messages of support to the British team for the Beijing Olympics next month. After dinner, the Bee Gees' Robin Gibb and soul singer Beverley Knight entertained guests with their classic hits.

The auction also raised money for the Gordon Banks statue fund - which will unveil The Smiling Statue , a tribute to the England legend, in Stoke on 12 July. One of the most popular lots, the chance to play in a Gordon Banks XI against a Pele XI, raised thousands of pounds with proceeds split evenly between the statue fund and the Labour Party.

The match is part of a weekend of events in honour of the Gordon Banks. This time, World Cup winners Banks and Pele will face each other as managers and their teams will include top footballers, TV stars, and one Alastair Campbell.
