Jim Murphy MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to concern within the Armed Forces over skills shortages arising from cuts to manpower said:

"The future shape of the Army is a critical national issue and any political row would signal an incompetence at the heart of government.

"There are now serious skills shortages in essential areas which could threaten our operational capability. We must be told if there is or will be an impact on operations in Afghanistan.

"Providing intelligence is essential in any conflict and technological skills are increasingly important. Advanced forces need specialist capabilities. Ministers must respond to clarify the impact of these shortages, why they have arisen and how the Government will prevent any negative impact.

"We support a greater role for Reservists but the Government's plans appear deeply flawed. The country must be given confidence there is a strategy to regenerate and protect the highest skills in our forces."
