Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on a warning from the Fuel Poverty Advisory Group that around 300,000 households will be pushed into fuel poverty this winter and as many as nine million people could be in fuel poverty by 2016, said:

“This shocking warning from the Government’s own advisers on fuel poverty is a damning indictment of David Cameron's failure to get to grips with spiralling energy bills.

“It beggars belief that with fuel bills up by nearly £300 in the last two and a half years, there is nothing in the Government’s Energy Bill to break the dominance of the energy giants or protect vulnerable customers from being ripped off. If the Tories really want to help people they should get behind Labour’s plans to open up the energy market and create a tough new watchdog with the power to force energy companies to pass on savings to consumers."
