Cathy Jamieson MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, said in response to Danny Alexander’s announcement of a rural fuel rebate pilot scheme in the Inner & Outer Hebrides, Northern Isles, islands in the Clyde and the Isles of Scilly:
“I hope this announcement will mean some relief for drivers in some island communities, but it will only come into effect over a year and a half after Danny Alexander promised action ‘within the next few months’.
“Out of touch Ministers need to realise it will do nothing to help hard-pressed motorists anywhere else in Scotland or across the rest of the UK. What we now need to see is a temporary VAT cut, part of Labour’s five point plan for jobs, which would cut the cost of petrol by 3p a litre in every part of the country and help boost our flatlining economy.”
