Maria Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to the written ministerial statement today on road infrastructure, said:
"The Government’s plans leave the door open to introducing charging on any road that is upgraded or modified. Drivers will rightly consider this to be a clear plan for charging on existing roads.
"The Transport Secretary needs to be clear with drivers about whether this proposed roll out of charging will create a two tier road network, with those unable to afford the tolls left in the slow lane. There will be understandable concern that privatising the roads will lead the cost of driving to spiral even higher."
