Richard Review on apprenticeships - Response from Chuka Umunna MP27 November 2012
Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the Government’s Richard review into apprenticeships to be published tomorrow, said:
“High quality apprenticeships can give young people a crucial ladder to a successful career. But apprenticeships have to mean quality and Labour has repeatedly warned Ministers that it can’t mean re-labelling short courses or in-work training as apprenticeships to boost numbers. We are pleased the Richard review agrees and we need the Government to give these assurances.
“Businesses need to be in the driving seat on setting standards to expanding places, and we need a Tech Bacc to support the value of vocational routes. This is the One Nation approach Ed Miliband set out at Labour Party Conference. The members of Labour's Skills Taskforce, launched yesterday - involving business leaders and vocational experts - will be taking forward this radical overall of vocational learning for a One Nation skills system.”
