I hope the Government's announcement today will go some way to rectify its record so far towards victims - Khan

30 January 2012

Sadiq KhanSadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting ahead of today’s announcement by the Government on a strategy for victims, said:

“Twenty months in, this Tory-led Government is finally bringing forward its much-delayed Victims' Strategy. But it's worrying that the overnight briefing by the Ministry of Justice on their proposals for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority appears to be a smokescreen, masking much wider and deeper cuts to compensation for those innocent victims of crime.

"I hope the Government's announcement today will go some way to rectify its record so far towards victims which has been nothing more than an affront to victims of crime. Their failings include not honouring the commitment to compensate British victims of overseas terrorism, not filling the vacant Victims' Commissioner role – designed to champion the needs of victims within and across Government, and riding roughshod over the concerns of victims with their proposals for a 50% sentence reduction for early guilty pleas.

"Their record in this area is shabby and illustrates just how out of touch this Government is towards the needs of the law abiding majority in this country. In contrast, Labour would place the needs of victims at the heart of our criminal justice system and seek to ensure victims are treated with respect and dignity by introducing a Victims Law."
