Radiologists' opposition to Health Bill confirms NHS professionals' crisis of confidence in Lansley - Burnham

30 January 2012

Andy BurnhamAndy Burnham MP, Labour's Shadow Health Secretary, commenting on the Royal College of Radiologists adopting a position of outright opposition to the Health and Social Care Bill, in addition to reports that the College of Emergency Medicine has reiterated its serious concern today, said:

“This news confirms a deepening crisis of confidence amongst health professionals in Andrew Lansley and his handling of the Health Bill.

“It comes at the end of a week of sheer panic in the Department of Health, but no amount of pleading phonecalls and desperate concessions will change what this Bill is; a privatisation plan for the NHS.

“That is why doctors, nurses, midwives and now radiologists are coming out in outright opposition to it. By continuing to dig in behind its discredited plans and taking on the professions, the Government is placing the NHS at great risk.

"The call to drop the Bill is gaining momentum and support from the professions and the public. Next week Labour is determined to escalate its call and take the campaign against the Bill to the next level. David Cameron cannot continue to ignore what senior clinicians are saying. He must act on his pledge to listen and drop his discredited and costly Bill."
