Home Secretary has confirmed Government policy was to routinely abandon EU biometric checks - Yvette Cooper9 November 2011
The Home Secretary has just confirmed Government policy was to weaken border checks far more than she told Parliament on Monday.
Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, said:
“The Home Secretary has provided an answer to a very important question, and it confirms Government policy was to routinely abandon EU biometric checks, rather than doing so in limited circumstances.
“This is not what she told Parliament in her statement on Monday, and it explains why the UK Border Agency went much further than the Prime Minister and she had previously said.
“This is immensely serious and the Home Secretary needs to immediately publish the Home Office instructions to UKBA which resulted in this far more relaxed guidance being distributed to frontline border staff.”
