Maria Eagle MP, Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to inaccurate claims by the Prime Minister that no coastguard station will close before 2015, said:
"This out of touch Prime Minister doesn’t even know that coastguard stations are being closed on his watch. Not only are stations due to close this year, but nearly half of all Britain’s coastguard stations will have been lost by 2015. He is presumably also unaware that staffing levels are worryingly being run down now even while stations remain operational, raising concerns over the impact on the effectiveness of the service.
"The Prime Minister must show more concern for the cuts to coastguard stations being implemented by his Transport Secretary and listen to the concerns of coastguards and coastal communities about the impact of these closures on safety at sea."
