Partial u-turns show how ill-thought through and out of touch Cameron and Osborne's Budget was - Reeves

29 May 2012

Rachel ReevesRachel Reeves MP, Labour's shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in response to reports that the government is to make partial u-turns on the pasty tax and caravan tax, said:

"George Osborne's Budget has been a total and utter shambles. These partial u-turns, just a few weeks after Ministers were defending the pasty tax and caravan tax, show just how ill thought through the Budget was and how out of touch David Cameron and George Osborne are.

"Ministers were clearly anxious to avoid a defeat in the House of Commons on Labour's motion next month, after Parliament's last vote on the caravan tax saw the Government's majority slashed to just 25.

"We now need to see a rethink on the biggest blunders in the Budget - the tax cut for millionaires while millions of pensioners and families are asked to pay more and the total absence of a plan for jobs and growth. With Britain pushed into a double dip recession by this government's mistakes we urgently need a change of course on economic policy."
