ONS report shows VAT hits the poorest hardest - Owen Smith

Owen Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, said in response to an Office for National Statistics report on the impact of VAT on the poorest households:
“This independent report confirms what Labour has always argued but which out of touch Ministers continue to deny: VAT is a regressive tax which hits the poorest harder than the richest.
“The Conservative-led Government should temporarily reverse their damaging VAT rise to help all families and pensioners who are struggling right now, especially those on the lowest incomes, and boost the flatlining economy. That’s why it’s one of the key parts of Labour’s five point plan for jobs and growth.”
