Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party, said:
“It's great to be here in Ilkeston.
“And it's great to be here in Labour Derbyshire.
“I am proud of the way our One Nation Labour Party has made real progress today.
“Winning the trust of people not just here in Derbyshire and next door in Nottinghamshire, but also in other key seats that Labour needs to win in 2015 - like Cannock, Crawley, Harlow, Hastings, Ipswich and Stevenage.
“And in places that often aren't Labour territory, from Cornwall to Hertfordshire.
“This shows we are a One Nation party, standing up for people in every part of Britain, from every background, not just one region - and not just a few at the top.
“But while Labour made good gains in these elections, it is clear there is more work to do.
“I know from travelling round the country in the last few weeks that many people are asking whether anyone can turn Britain round.
“This is reflected in the vote for UKIP and the two thirds of people who didn't vote.
“These elections show many people have lost trust in David Cameron's ability to change Britain.
“But our task is to win the trust of the people we haven't yet persuaded that Labour can make the difference.
“The biggest opponent we will face at the next election is the idea that no one has any real answers and there is nothing we can do to turn things around.
“I passionately believe we can make a difference by making real lasting change on the big issues that people worry about.
“From stalling wages to energy bills to the scar of one million young people out of work, we can turn this country round.
“By building an economic recovery made by the many.
“A recovery built to last.
“Our task between now and the general election is to make that case to the British people.
“So that we can begin that work together.”
