Not too late to listen on school sport - Twigg

9 August 2012

Stephen TwiggStephen Twigg MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on Boris Johnson’s remarks on PE, said:

“Everyone who loves sport agrees we need to ensure pupils get enough hours of PE every week.

“The Prime Minister and Michael Gove seem increasingly out of touch. But it’s not too late to listen to people like their sports adviser Dame Kelly Holmes.

“With Labour, we not only had a target of pupils doing 2 hours of sport a week, it was backed up with a support structure, which meant that by 2010, 90 per cent of pupils were doing 2 hours a week. By cutting the budget by 69 per cent and scrapping the target, the Government are jeopardising their progress.

“Labour would bring back that target and we want to develop a 10 year, cross-party national pan for school sport that would provide the necessary support for it to happen, and ensure the Olympic legacy of inspiring the next generation.”
