Jim Murphy MP, Labour's Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to reports that 600 specialist SAS support roles could be lost, said:
“A reduction in Special Forces capability would be self defeating.
“Necessary secrecy over Special Forces operations does not justify hidden cuts in their capability.
“Specialised, high-end Forces are important now more than ever and many may lose their roles at the same time as Ministers hail their importance.
“Without the high skilled specialists who enable Special Forces we risk overstretch and questions over our ability to achieve our ambitions overseas.
“This comes at a time of confusion over government defence spending plans and the country will want an explanation."
