NATS is a national success story that must remain in British hands - Maria Eagle

29 June 2012

Maria EagleMaria Eagle MP, Labour's Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to NATS’ pre-tax profits of £195m for 2011/12, said:

"The strength of NATS’ performance demonstrates the success of the reforms introduced by the last Labour Government. It would be reckless and short-sighted of Ministers to put this at risk by selling off Britain's air traffic control for a quick profit when it now makes a substantial annual return that benefits the industry and taxpayers. It's no surprise that other countries cannot wait to snap up this British success story.

"The Government should now confirm it has abandoned its plans and categorically rule out selling the country's controlling stake in NATS. I am also calling on the airlines not to sell their stake in NATS when the present ownership model is working so well for the aviation industry. and to ensure it remains in British ownership.

"After today's results, Ministers must finally recognise the clear national interest in maintaining control of this key strategic asset which operates at no cost to the taxpayer and continues to deliver an ongoing dividend to the Treasury.”
