About Sharon Hodgson

Sharon Hodgson was elected as the Labour MP for Gateshead East and Washington West in 2005. As a member of the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee Sharon has a keen interest in education and in 2008 she devised the Special Educational Needs (Information) Bill, steering it through Parliament and onto the statute books.

As an enthusiastic campaigner, Sharon wasted no time in her fight to improve care for breast cancer sufferers, being heavily involved in the campaign to make Herceptin available on the NHS.

Sharon's commitment to health issues was rewarded this summer when she was appointed PPS to the Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo. This position followed working as a PPS in the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office.

Sharon has led the push for the pilots of universal free school meals, announced at Labour Party conference and remains committed to closing the ‘North-South divide.

Before being elected, Sharon worked for UNISON as a Labour Link officer and was Siobhain McDonagh’s Organiser at the 2001 election. It isn't all work, work, work though and Sharon is a keen fan of X Factor, Coronation Street and even Big Brother!

Thanks for visiting.
