He has served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary for three Secretaries of State at the Welsh Office, Ron Davies MP, Alun Michael MP and Paul Murphy MP. He was a Government Whip with responsibilities for the Welsh MP’s and for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs between 2002 and 2005, and served as a minister in the Wales office until 2007, when he returned to the backbenches. Prior to his election to Parliament he worked at Marine and Port Services in Pembroke Dock, a main contractor to all the oil companies based in Pembrokeshire, including Texaco. His work as a rigger consisted of berthing and connecting tankers to oil jetties. He was a Senior Shop Steward and Branch Secretary of the TGWU. He was also elected to Dyfed County Council in 1981 and remained a County Councillor until his election to Parliament. On a personal note Nick has lived in Pembroke Dock, in his constituency, since 1972, is married to Sally and has a 31 year old daughter, Sadie, and a 2 year old grandson. |
