About Iain McKenzie

Iain McKenzie was born in Greenock in 1959. He has lived in Inverclyde his whole life, worked in Inverclyde for most of his life and raised his family in Inverclyde too. He is married with two grown-up sons.

Iain was born in the old Rankin Hospital and stayed initially with his Gran at Drumfrochar Road. Aged 8, his parents moved to a new council house in Osprey Road. He attended Highlanders Academy, Lady Alice Primary School and Greenock High School.

After leaving school, Iain became an apprentice mechanic working on HGV’s.  He worked for IBM, a major local employer, for 28 years rising to become a Procurement Officer, but left the company in 2010 to work for the Wise Group.

Whilst working at IBM, Iain decided to pursue his passion for politics and decided to run for a Local Government Councillors position. He was successfully elected on 2003. Throughout his tenure as a Local Councillor, Iain held the position Convenor of Education and Lifelong Learning, where he oversaw a massive rebuilding and refurbishment programme of local schools – many of which have opened recently and others are opening in the coming months. In 2007 Iain became Depute Leader of Inverclyde Council and in February 2011, he served as the Leader of Inverclyde Council.
