Sadiq Khan MP, Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on today’s prison population numbers, said:
"Since Christmas, there are over 1,000 more people in our already overcrowded prisons.
"With this Tory-led Government having cancelled Labour’s prison building programme and closed prisons the genuine fear is that our prison system simply won’t have the spaces to cope with the seasonal rise seen every Winter and Spring.
"If ever we needed evidence of the irresponsibility of this Government’s short-termism then cancelling prison building and leaving insufficient accommodation for offenders then this it. They just don’t have a clue on law and order.
"If the prison population rises much further than there is a possibility that the Government will need to fork out £385 a night to place prisoners in court and police station cells. Not only will this lump the taxpayer with an extra, unnecessary cost, it will undermine rehabilitation and attempts at reducing re-offending.
