Where customers have been mis-sold energy deals there should be proper compensation - Flint

16 December 2011

Caroline FlintCaroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, responding to SSE's sales guarantee, said:

“For too long energy companies have been able to do what they want at the expense of everybody else. Where customers have been mis-sold energy deals, there should be proper compensation. SSE’s sales guarantee is a welcome first step, but all the energy companies should have teams looking back at customers’ energy use to direct them to lower tariffs and offering refunds where they were misled about their energy package. Only then would they start to regain consumers' trust.

"The fact that the Government has failed to stand up to the big six over soaring energy bills this winter shows just how out of touch they are with the real pressures facing families and pensioners.

"Until the big six energy companies sell all of their energy into a pool, and new companies compete to sell it to the public, we won't get the lower prices and fairer tariffs people need."
