Ministers have lost their grip on botched higher education policy agenda - Mahmood

24 January 2012

Shabana MahmoodShabana Mahmood MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Higher Education, commenting on reports that the Government is planning to delay the Higher Education Bill indefinitely, said:

“Today’s reports that the Higher Education Bill has been dropped show how ministers have lost any grip on their botched policy agenda. David Willetts needs to explain to universities and to Parliament what is happening so they can plan for the future and continue the excellent work that they do.

“First with the White Paper and now the Higher Education Bill, ministers have repeatedly delayed announcements, creating unnecessary chaos and confusion for universities and students alike. Labour has backed calls from the sector and the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee for a year of stability in the higher education sector so that our institutions can concentrate on the world class teaching and research that they are renowned for.”
