Ministers should listen to their own advisers and stop looking for ways to hide the problem of child poverty - Liam Byrne

22 April 2013

Liam ByrneLiam Byrne MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to warnings from the Government’s own advisers that child poverty could get worse, said:

“Labour lifted over one million children out of poverty. Now this Government is forecast to plunge one million children into poverty by the end of the decade. Ministers should listen to their own advisers, stop looking for ways to hide the problem and build on Labour’s proud record, not destroy it.

“Unemployment is soaring, prices are rising faster than wages, and many people are now better off on benefits than in a job - and millions of children are paying the price. Yet instead of helping hard working families ministers have slashed their tax credits whilst giving a massive tax cut to millionaires.”
