Jacqui Smith comments on neighbourhood policing:

“People tell me they want to see their police out and about in their neighbourhoods, accessible and visible.

“And the police know that if they’re if we’re really going to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour we need to work together with local communities.

“That’s why from this April there will be a neighbourhood policing team in every neighbourhood in England and Wales.

“It’s why we’ve launched the Name in Every Neighbourhood campaign so that you’ll be able to find out the name and how to contact your teams so you’ll be able to feed in your priorities to what should be happening locally.

“By July, they’ll be information about local crime levels and we’ll launch a website so you can find out all of the information about your neighbourhood.

“We’ll build on this to make sure that locally we’ll get a contract between communities and the police that will help us not only to continue to drive down crime, but that people will feel confident and we’ll be able to reduce the fear of crime everywhere.

“This is a major initiative from this Labour Government.”
