Labour launches its 2008 local elections campaign

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown MP launched Labour’s local elections campaign today, with a focus on Labour’s plans for a dedicated neighbourhood policing team in every area in England.

Launching Labour’s ‘New Labour, Your Britain’ campaign launch document, GORDON BROWN MP said:

“Our starting point is, and always will be, the struggles and the hopes and ambitions of hard-working families.

“The priorities of Britain’s families who play by the rules are our priorities – education, the NHS, cutting crime, affordable housing and a strong economy.

"People need to see their policemen and women in their communities to feel safer so this Government has ensured that every community in England will have its own dedicated neighbourhood police team patrolling the streets, contactable by mobile phone, and in touch with local people."

The Labour Leader was joined by Harriet Harman MP, Labour's Deputy Leader and Party Chair and by Labour’s Policing Minister Tony McNulty MP as they listened to local residents’ concerns at Bedwell Community Centre in Stevenage.

Gordon Brown MP added:

“We are going to get every vote out. We are going to organise in every community in the country so that people have a chance to vote locally for the councillors they want, for councillors that are leading in the local communities and on the local issues that matter.

“I think the record of Stevenage council – and I do want to praise them – shows what a local Labour council can achieve. They are investing in housing, they are investing in policing as we’ve seen with the localities team. They are investing in all the range of services that have helped elderly people as well as young people.

“I think people will see over the next few weeks that what Labour is doing - in difficult circumstances faced with a world downturn that is affecting countries everywhere - is that we’re trying to ensure that people are properly protected against what is happening around the world.”

After watching Gordon and listening to what he had to say made me feel good I am part of the Labour Party the TRUE LABOUR PARTY. I have been a Councillor in Newcastle for 1 year and I am up for election in May I became a councillor to support the ordinary working families get what they deserve. I will do this by listening to what they want and fight this Lib Dem run Council and show them up for what they are.

I think your contribution would carry more force if you explained a bit about how far short the Lib Dem Council has been. In the absence of specific comments it is impossible for readers to draw an opinion as to the Council's performance and your comment that they need to be shown up for what they are.
