How can I get a vote in these elections?

It is only members of the Labour Party or members of affiliated Trade Unions or Socialist Societies that are able to vote in the elections for Labour’s next Leader and Deputy Leader. Fully paid up party members and those members who are less than six months in arrears will be able to take part in these elections.

How long do I have to join to get a vote?


The NEC agreed at its meeting on Sunday, 13 May the freeze date for new members is 12.30 on Friday 1 June. The freeze date has now passed.

How can I check the status of my membership?

How can I put my questions to the candidates?

How do I register for the hustings?

To register for the hustings you will need to visit your MpURL, Labour members net at labour.org.uk/membersnet. Registration for all of the hustings will open on Monday 14 May. Space is limited and will be secured on a first come first serve basis. An e-ticket will be sent out once you have successfully registered. You will need to bring this with you along with a piece of photographic identification.

We are asking every member to make a minimum voluntary contribution of £10 to help us deliver a fourth term Labour government.

Where will I be able to find out how the candidates are doing in the contest?


The Labour Party will post the nominations and supporting nominations received by each of the validly nominated candidates. Supporting nominations closed at 12.30pm on Friday, 1 June. To see the nominations and supporting nominations each of them received visit the candidates' pages of the website.

What is the difference between a nomination and a supporting nomination?

Commons members of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) may each cast one nomination for each of the positions of Leader and Deputy Leader. A candidate must receive 12.5% of the support of the PLP, or 45 Members of Parliament, to be validly nominated. Each Constituency Labour Party, Member of the European Parliament and affiliated organisation may cast a supporting nomination for each of the positions of Leader and Deputy Leader. These supporting nominations indicate the strength of support for the candidates across all stakeholder groups of the party. The nominations and supporting nominations are posted on the Labour Party website.

How can a CLP cast its supporting nomination for a candidate?

In March of this year, the NEC issued guidelines for CLP supporting nomination meetings. These guidelines are also available from your CLP Secretary’s MpURL, Labour members net at labour.org.uk/membersnet. For details of when your Constituency will be holding these meetings, contact your CLP Secretary. The supporting nominations period closes at 17.30 on Friday 1 June.

Is it upto the individual CLP to nominate a delegate to the leadership conference, or is it the delegate who attended last years annual conference who is entitled to go?

The Leadership Conference is open to all members of the Labour Party. CLPs may also send a delegation if they wish; there are no restrictions on the gender or number. However, space is limited so places - for individual members and delegations - will be reserved on a first come first serve basis.

What is the Leadership Conference?

The Leadership Conference is the event at which the results of the ballots are announced and the new Leader and Deputy Leader are declared. The Leadership Conference is comprised of representatives from the Electoral College – MPs and MEPs, individual party members, and Affiliated Organisations.

When will the results be announced?

The results of these elections will be announced at the Leadership Conference in Manchester on Sunday 24 May. To register for the Leadership Conference please click here.

Am I entitled to attend the Leadership Conference?

The Leadership Conference, which will take place on Sunday, 24 June, is open to all members of the Labour Party. Space is restricted and therefore places will be reserved on a on a first come, first serve basis.

The NEC has also agreed that constituencies and affiliated organisations be able to send delegations to the Leadership Conference. CLP Secretaries and Affiliated Organisations may register their delegations through their members net.

How do I register for the Leadership Conference?

Delegates can register for the Leadership Conference on-line through their MpURL, Labour’s members net, labour.org.uk/membersnet. There will be a charge of £50 per delegate. Registration is open now. Space is limited and will be reserved on a first come first serve basis so register early!

The closing date for registration for the Leadership Conference is 5.00pm on Monday, 18 June.

How will votes be cast in the election?

In accordance with the Labour Party Rulebook, a third of the votes will go to each of the following sections:

MPs and MEPs;
Individual party members;
affiliated organisations (4B.2c(ii)).

When will I get my ballot paper?

As agreed by the NEC, ballots will be issued to all members of the Labour Party, members of affiliated Trade Unions and Social Societies from Wednesday 6 June.

How do I get a replacement ballot paper?

Contact us on 08705 900 200 with any queries or to replace your ballot paper. The deadline for requesting a replacement ballot is 5.00pm on Monday, 18 June.

What communications will the Labour Party be sending me?

Following the NEC meeting on Sunday, 13 May and where the timetable was agreed for these elections. An information pack will be posted out to all stakeholders following this meeting with all the information you will need to take part in these elections. This information pack will also be emailed out on the day. Throughout the contest we will also be sending you e-bulletins alerting you to the latest news.
