BAME husting, Leicester (30 May)
On Wednesday evening, over 300 people from the Black and Minority Ethnic community gathered in Leicester to hear from and put their questions to Gordon Brown and all candidates competing to be the next Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
People travelled from all over the country, with more than 25 CLPs represented, to consider the challenges facing BAME communities today, including how we could better involve BAME party members. A full and frank discussion was had and an attendee from Leicester East CLP, Mian Mayat, commented that the event was “a great opportunity for black and minority ethnic party members to put questions to and make our voice heard by the new leadership team. It reminded us that it is only Labour that will deliver a more fair, equal and tolerant society. The food, music and debate made the evening a real celebration of Labour’s commitment to BAME communities.”
