Labour warns of 'ticking timebomb' of youth unemployment16 April 2012
Ed Miliband and Stephen Twigg will visit Workplace Stratford in Newham today at 11am. Workplace was opened in 2007 as Newham’s one stop shop for job matching.
Labour today warns of a ‘ticking timebomb’ of youth unemployment in cities like London which the Tory-led Government is failing to address.
On the Government’s watch, in the last year alone, the number of young people on Jobseekers Allowance for more than a year has gone up by 156 per cent. This rise is three times more than the percentage rise for people of all ages.
In London, the same number has gone up by 248 per cent in the last year.
If Labour were in Government right now, we would tax bankers’ bonuses to introduce the Real Jobs Guarantee for all 18-24 year olds who have been on JSA for more than a year. This would help over 110,000 people nationally and 5,000 in London.
On their visit to Workplace Stratford, Ed Miliband and Stephen Twigg will highlight how Labour-run Newham Council are with people in tough times, and doing more with less by helping people find jobs through innovative partnerships with businesses.
The Labour-run council’s pioneering Workplace scheme, entirely funded by the council, has just placed its 5,000th user into a job.
Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party speaking during a visit to a job support service in Newham said:
“The Tory-led Government is shockingly complacent about the rising numbers of young people who have been out of work for over a year. Without real help, a generation is at risk of being left behind by this out of touch Government.
“Today, Labour will say clearly to those young people: we are with you. We would provide you with real help – a guaranteed job for six months, along with training and development. And we would tax bankers’ bonuses to make it happen.
“Our Real Jobs Guarantee will help those who have been looking for work for a year, giving young people the increased self esteem which comes from having a job.
“This is far more than the Tories offer. These are real jobs, not just advice. They will have real wages, not unpaid placements. And real sanctions for those who do not take the job.”
Stephen Twigg MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary added:
“Many young people face a catch 22 situation. They can’t find work because they don’t have experience. And they can’t get experience because there is no work. Labour will change that with our Real Jobs Guarantee.
“Under the Tory-led Government, youth unemployment has skyrocketed to over a million – a shocking waste of talent.
“It is no wonder, when David Cameron has got rid of careers advice services like Connexions, abolished support for teenagers to attend school or college, and trebled tuition fees. They are completely out of touch with the needs of this generation.
“This is a ticking timebomb. Young people who are left on the shelf will store up future problems through the extra cost of benefits, and in some case crime and antisocial behaviour. So Labour’s plans make long term sense.
“Councils like Labour-run Newham show how we can do more with less – they have helped 5,000 local people into jobs through innovative partnerships with businesses.
“The choice for young people is simple. Real help to get a real job under Labour. Or empty words with the Conservatives and Lib Dems.”
