Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham

John DenhamLabour's MP for Southampton Itchen, John Denham, is also the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills.

In his role at the newly-formed department, John will be working to deliver our long-term vision to make Britain one of the best places in the world for science, innovation and research, and to ensure our nation has the skilled workforce it needs to compete in the global economy. 

Previously, he has been Minister of State at the Home Office, the Department for Health and the Department for Social Security. More recently he was Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee.

Prior to being elected to Parliament in 1992, John was a local councillor and served on Hampshire's County Council from 1981 to 1989 and on Southampton's City Council from 1989 to 1993.

He was educated at Woodroffe school in Lyme Regis before graduating from Southampton University, where he became president of the student's union.

He was then head of youth affairs at the British Council from 1979 to 1983 and has worked for a number of development agencies including Christian Aid and Oxfam.

John has three children and is an avid fan of Southampton Football Club. As a season ticket holder, he can be seen most Saturdays cheering on the Saints.
