Irresponsible of the Home Secretary to ignore security concerns in Olympic year for the sake of her political timetable - Cooper

23 November 2011

Yvette CooperYvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, on reports today on the introduction of Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIMs), said:

“It is clear that the security services and police are concerned about the operation of the TPIMs regime and the impact on our security. It is irresponsible of the Home Secretary to ignore serious security concerns, especially in Olympic year, for the sake of her political timetable.

“We have tabled amendments to the TPIMs Bill today delaying its introduction until after the Olympics and Paralympics which will represent a massive security effort by all concerned and when resources will be stretched enough.

“Theresa May is reducing counter-terror powers and resources, at a time when we know the pressures are growing. It is a deep concern that the Home Secretary herself is choosing to increase the risks in Olympic year. I urge her not to take unnecessary risks with security – she can do this by backing our amendment when the Bill returns to the House of Commons.”
