Instead of action on repossessions all we have is complacency from an out-of-touch Government - Dromey

9 February 2012

Jack DromeyJack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing Minister, commenting on today’s repossession figures and Grant Shapps' funding re-announcement, said:

“These alarming figures which show 36,200 repossessions last year remain a real cause for concern and show no room for complacency as repossessions are predicted to rise by 24% to 45,000 next year as a result of rising unemployment and the continuing squeeze on household incomes.

“But instead of action all we have is complacency from an out-of-touch Government as they re-announce a scheme that Labour first announced in 2009 which will mean nothing to those families that were forced out of their homes last year.

“In 2011 there was a shocking rise in forced repossessions, up 20%, as Government made life more difficult for struggling families by making cuts to Support for Mortgage Interest, reductions in funding to advice services in many parts of the country, and unfair changes to housing benefit.”

“Instead of taking action to tackle the real problem by implementing a plan for growth and jobs, the Government has simply chosen to re-announce a fund first announced by Labour 3-years ago. Labour's five point plan for jobs and growth shows a different way. Getting the economy moving and people back to work is the surest way to help families stay in their homes, build more homes, get the deficit down and put Britain on the right course for the future.”
