Information Commission right to criticise Letwin on dumped letters - Dugher

15 November 2011

Michael DugherMichael Dugher MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, commenting on the Information Commissioner’s report on Oliver Letwin, said:

"This Government is desperately out of touch, but when people tried to tell Oliver Letwin what was happening, he dumped their letters in a park bin. That's not just out of touch. It's out to lunch.

"It's good that Oliver Letwin has signed a commitment to stop dumping confidential personal information in park bins. But it's shocking that the Tory minister in charge of overseeing all Government policy should have acted with such disdain in the first place.

"With both Oliver Letwin and Vince Cable taking such a lax approach to data security, it's right that the Information Commissioner has reminded him of his responsibilities – but he shouldn’t have to."
