Catherine McKinnell MP, Labour's Shadow Children's Minister, responding to the children in care figures today, said:
"Today's figures show there is even greater pressure on children's social services. We’ve seen the number of children being taken into care steadily rising, yet many local authorities are facing a cut of around a third to their children's services budget.
"Local authorities need the resources to ensure the interests of the child are at the heart of their decisions, and social workers need to be freed to provide family support and not simply administration. This means early intervention before the needs of the child are so great that they end up needing to be taken into care. It's a false economy and vulnerable children should not be paying the price."
