Government undoing a decade of progress in tackling child poverty - Timms12 June 2012
Stephen Timms MP, Labour’s Shadow Employment Minister, in response to Tuesday’s Child Poverty Action Group report, said:
“This report is yet another nail in the coffin for compassionate conservatism.
“After all the rhetoric the truth is becoming increasingly clear – this Government is undoing a decade of progress in tackling child poverty.
“Ministers have taken more than twice as much from families with children as they have from the banks, and in George Osborne’s last budget he found room for a tax cut for millionaires but nothing new to fight child poverty. With our economy now in a double dip recession made in Downing Street this tells you everything you need to know about the choices this Government is making.
"With the Government’s own estimates predicting an increase in child poverty, Ministers cannot claim to be serious about protecting some of our most vulnerable children.”
