Michael Dugher MP, Labour's Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, commenting on the latest figures revealing a big drop in the number of SMEs securing Government contracts despite a Government pledge to ensure that “25% of all government contracts are awarded to small and medium-sized enterprises”, said:
“Small businesses are really struggling at the moment because the Government has failed to get the banks to give them the support they need. That’s why over four thousand businesses have gone to the wall in the last three months.
“Despite promising that 25 per cent of Government contracts would go to small and medium sized enterprises, shocking new figures reveal that small businesses are winning less of the proportion of public contracts.
“This Tory-led Government should be backing small businesses, not freezing them out as is increasingly the case.”
