Government is out of touch and complacent to describe figures that show rising unemployment amongst women as 'encouraging' - Cooper

Yvette CooperYvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, responding to today’s labour market statistics, said:

"Women's unemployment is still going up and there are over 100,000 more unemployed women compared to a year ago. The Government is out of touch and complacent to describe figures that show rising unemployment amongst women as ‘encouraging’. Women’s unemployment remains at its highest level for more than two decades.

“Ministers have a blind spot over what is happening to women under this Tory-led Government. Rising child care costs, cuts to tax credits and the scale of public sector job losses are still forcing mums out of the labour market, turning the clock back on women’s equality for the first time in a generation.”
