Government need to take action to bring down energy prices this winter - Flint

21 October 2011

Caroline FlintCaroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commenting on news today from uSwitch.com that energy costs are subject to a postcode lottery with differences of up to £180 on bills in different regions in the UK, said:

“The public will not understand why two households on the same tariff, using the same amount of energy, are charged different amounts. How can a family in Brentford pay £66 more than a family in Brighton, just for living in a different place?

“It shows how out of touch the Government is to claim all the public need to do is shop around to get a better deal. Do they have any idea what it feels like to be ripped off in this way?

“We were told there were 400 tariffs – this suggests that there could be 4,000. Fewer, simpler tariffs must be part of the answer.

“We need the Tory-led Government to end the warm words and stand up to the vested interests in the energy market, and take some real action to bring down energy prices for people in every part of our country this winter.”
