Tessa Jowell MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for London, commenting on figures out today which show private sector jobs losses increasing at a faster rate than the rest of the UK, said:
“Today’s private sector job figures show that London’s Tory Mayor and the Tory-led Government are failing to deliver on their promise of increased private sector jobs in London.
“Instead of creating more opportunities for work in the private sector, they are presiding over a decrease in jobs in the Capital faster than anywhere else in the country, despite London being the number one engine for UK growth.
“The Government’s cuts and tax rises go too far and too fast and are doing nothing to help create new jobs in the private sector. The Government’s flagship jobs policy deliberately excludes London, and take up has been shockingly low as it also excludes most small businesses.
“The Government should follow Labour’s five point plan and use the money set aside for that scheme to fund a national scheme which includes London and gives a tax break to every small firm in London that takes on extra workers.”
