Government ends target of two hours school sport a week - Stephen Twigg response

Stephen Twigg MP, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on the decision of the Government to end the target of pupils doing two hours of sport a week, said:

"London 2012 has shown the amazing success that can be achieved with dedication, hard work and support for sport. If we are to ensure that the games meet their objective of inspiring the next generation, the support structures must be in place in schools and at the grassroots.

"With a Labour Government, the number of young people doing at least 2 hours of sport per week went from just 1 in every 4 to 9 in every 10. There is a danger that this success could slip back.

"Labour want to work constructively with the Government to ensure one of the legacies of the Olympics is world-class school sports provision."
