The Tory-led Government have now admitted for the first time that they have got the funding of the police wrong - Cooper

31 January 2012

Yvette CooperYvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on the Police Grant Report for England and Wales 2012-13 today, said:

"The Tory-led Government have now admitted for the first time that they have got the funding of the police wrong.

"We have been calling for over a year for the Home Secretary to re-open police funding budgets - not just for London but across the country - to prevent over 16,000 officers being lost.

“For London this u-turn provides a one year sticking plaster. But this pre-election bung for London is not being provided for any other force, and it doesn't last more than 12 months.

“The Home Secretary shouldn't provide this extra funding for the Met without considering the additional pressures on every other force facing cuts that go too far too fast next year. The Government should be setting budgets to protect community safety, not just the safety of Boris Johnson.

"Theresa May needs to rethink not just in London but for policing across the country.

“Next week the Commons will debate the police grants, and she should change the funding for every force not just the Met."
